Jewellery photo-shoot

Did a photo-shoot for a jewellery designer today. The theme that I came up with was really based on what Jewellery can mean to the wearer. Using as a starting point the experimentation with dressing up that many young girls do, and really how that progresses and evolves from a fairy tale fantasy to the expression of the person that one has become or indeed wishes to become. The photos therefore draw on that experimentation as a young girl that finally evolves into the expression of ones individual personality through what we wear, a mixture of fantasy and practicality. Indeed these two contradictions are to be found in the Jewellery of “The Palace Jewels”.

I was contacted the other day by someone who had seen a website I had created for another client, and wanted to commission me to build one for her. As she lived in Florida many miles and time-zones away, and as I like to talk with my clients even prospective ones so that I can get the best understanding I can of there needs, I arrange to call her and do the meeting over the phone. To cut a long story short she liked what I proposed, and it was decided that I should design a site and a logo.

I wanted the logo done first so that I could get an understanding of whether I had rightly understood her design needs before all the time and expense of creating the website (more of that later).

Anyway the brief was fairly open, the client had many ideas, which is always good, so I had to try and find something that was common to all those ideas a representative icon. So I hit the ‘net and the books looking for inspiration, the more I looked, the more I kept coming back to something I had written in my notes from when I spoke with the client. I had written ” simple classic, not fussy, timeless “. To me that translated to an Interpretation of needs expressed like this. There are two sides to the character of the pieces you make and wish to highlight. The name ‘The Palace Jewels’, evokes a certain lifestyle, elegance and a ‘savoir faire’ this relates to those who would buy the pieces. You are especially passionate about the historical, cultural and geographic influences that give your pieces their identity, this references a world very different to the intended purchaser. The identity therefore expressed by the name The Palace Jewels is quite different to the influences and passion you feel for the geography and culture that influenced the creation of the pieces. I therefore decided to concentrate on the buyer for your pieces as expressed by the name The Palace Jewels. I wanted something elegant but restrained. Something that would enhance your pieces and not overwhelm them. I decided to keep the colours to a minimum and indeed used classic black and white as used in most evening wear by both men and women ( for example: the tuxedo, and the black dress )

Here is the resulting text logo that was used for business cards and will be used as the masthead for the web site.

Just for fun – A promotional poster.

Just for fun, as the client had not shown an interest in pursuing this idea, but I kinda liked it so I thought I would give it a go. I was creating a portfolio of the shots for the client (African Jewellery) when I decided that I would like to knock up a promotional poster/image. This was really for my own interest, I wanted to see what this recurring image that I had in my head would look like once I got it onto the computer screen. Briefly, the image is built up of several layers and of several individual images and textures, these were taken into GIMP and adjusted to get the final result. The font used is a finger painting font from dafont.com.

A local jewellery designer, has asked me to take some product photos. She specialises in African inspired works that are cast, she designs all the pieces herself and over sees the manufacture in a a small foundry in Italy. She then assembles all the components into the finished jewellery herself. the shots were to feature in an online gallery, rather than in a print catalogue.

The shots featured here are but a sample of what was taken. Here the items are photographed on a shiny black plexiglass sheet. Lighting was from above,front and sides, and a DIY light tent was used to diffuse the light.

Well I have just got the cards back from the printers, and I must say I am impressed with how they turned out. I was a little concerned as to whether the sand and molten metal would print out just as I had wanted. As you all know, there is always a difference between what one sees on a computer screen and how those colours are rendered when they go through a four colour press.

This is a rather taxing one I have been approached by a jewellery designer to create a logo, and business cards and eventually do some product shots of her amazing African inspired jewellery.

Taxing, in the sense of challenging, the client whom I was able to meet with as she is local, wants an existing graphic image included, that of a sea-horse and also wants the raw elements that are used in her jewellery represented on the business card. These are molten metal, and sand, the sand because of the moulding process, where the molten metal is poured into a sand mould. Anyway we had a long chat and from our meeting I was able to note down a number of things about her business that would help me pull these elements together.

Just spent an enjoyable day shooting a bed-&-breakfast in France. The large and beautiful house, set on a hill over looking a mediaeval village sits in it own well looked after grounds. My wife did the dressing of each room, bringing some treasures that she had found in French Brocantes and vide greniers (yard sales).

The shoot took the whole day and the owners served us a lovely lunch in the garden. We had put the shoot off a number of times because of the weather.But luckily we believed the weather forecast for this day, and it turned out as beautiful as forecast, sunny but not too hot.

The images will be used in a website I will be building for the owners.
